How does GEDmark work? When you export your research as a GEDCOM file, your genealogy program includes author information in the file. However, this information can only be found in one location in the GEDCOM and is not linked to the individuals in the file. Because of this, it has become very easy for others to incorporate your GEDCOM into their own file without giving the proper credit to you, the GEDCOM author. On the other hand, when a GEDCOM file is processed through GEDmark, a source is attached to every person in the GEDCOM file, indicating your author information. You can enter as much information about yourself as you would like, including name, address, telephone number, email, web site and additional comments. This way, no matter how many times the GEDCOM file is split, imported, exported or submitted, your authorship of the research is protected. Can I use this to mark files other people share with me? Correct sourcing is a common problem for many researchers today, especially for those who import GEDCOM files created by others into their own data files. When those GEDCOM files are imported, it is easy to lose track of where the information came from. To get around this, some genealogists have been forced to manually add a source to everyone they import, and as a result miss sourcing some individuals, or even add a source to the wrong individuals.
