It was 11 years until America's 100th birthday, and one of the men said that France should give the United States a monument to liberty in commemoration of the event. Sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi was commissioned to design a sculpture with the year 1876 in mind for completion, to commemorate the centennial of the American Declaration of Independence. Because of delays on both sides of the Atlantic, the statue was not totally completed until 1886. `http://writetools.com/women/stories/statue_liberty.html Taken from the Internet, July 14, 2001.The Erie CanalK+Governor DeWitt Clinton of New York convinced the state legislature to authorize $7 million for construction of a canal 363 miles long, 40 feet wide and four feet deep.
